Issues of Importance
Transportation
We must lobby and support candidates who are zealous about finding solutions to our transportation problems.
-
How can the Grand Strand compete with other major destinations
for tourism dollars when it is difficult to drive to and from the region? Since our drive market constitutes 93 percent of our tourist activity, this is a major concern. And, if our tourist business is doing well, the local economy remains strong and the area non-tourism businesses benefit, as well.
-
We desperately need one or more quick, dependable evacuation routes during the threat of a hurricane or other impending natural or man-made disasters.
-
Other transportation needs, such as airport expansion or road/bridge maintenance, are important and must be solved through state and/or federal funding.
Tourism Promotion
Will the GS Statewide PAC support a candidate who is not concerned with how to grow tourism? Of course not. Tourism growth is important to the Grand Strand in order to fill the growing number of hotel rooms and to support area restaurants, attractions, golf courses and shopping centers…. the list of businesses supported by tourism goes on and on. Currently, the Grand Strand’s tourism industry is consistently outspent by other tourism entities. Increased tourism promotion is necessary to grow our largest industry, tourism.
Economic Diversification
The future of our community depends on our ability to diversify our economy by encouraging business development and attracting both tourism-related and other industry opportunities to the Grand Strand.
Beach Protection
The beach is our No. 1 tourist attraction. Candidates we support and lobby must support beach renourishment and beach protection, which will in turn protect our livelihoods. Education
Educating our children is a high priority for the Grand Strand. They are our future and the success of the Grand Strand lies in their hands. Educating our children properly and making college accessible and affordable for all students will keep Grand Strand businesses competitive and successful. Healthcare and Workplace Reform
The issues we are concerned with consist primarily around workers’ compensation reform, including the elimination of the Second Injury Fund, Medicaid reform aimed at reducing overall costs of healthcare, and allowing trade associations and chambers of commerce to offer fully- or partially-funded healthcare benefits to small businesses.
